La cultura está al sur: Matadero
Barely ten years ago, Legazpi, a few stops from Puerta del Sol on Line 3 of the metro, had no other attraction than that of being a working-class district with a large immigrant population. Today, without having lost its character, it is the home of a cultural landmark that is bringing the area to life: Matadero Madrid.
Built, as its name indicates in Spanish, where an abattoir used to be, the old facilities have now become rooms that hold theatres, cinemas, exhibitions and concerts. However, the best thing to do is to see it for yourself and be surprised by its cultural offer. One of these events is the installation that you can see until August 30th titled Europe: Winter landscapes by Florentino Díaz. It is a room made with demolition materials where it does not stop raining. Through videos you can see anonymous lives of the 20th century, gathered in albums found in flea markets, in what is a highly evocative installation.
In the film archive, they screen documentaries and modern auteur films of contrasted quality. One of them is ¡Buen Camino!: seis peregrinos y un destino, a film that tells the real stories of pilgrims on the Way of St. James with transcendent effort. It is screened every day until July 26th in the Azcona and Borau rooms. Tickets cost 6 euros.
Do not miss out on the alternative music session prepared for the night of the 1st of August, from 8.00pm until 11.00pm, with bands and singers such as Futuro, Germán Carrascosa, Paraíso de la Mierda or María Pratts.
And to recover from so many thrills, check out La Cantina, Matadero’s main bar-restaurant, where you can enjoy some light fusion menus as well as homemade cakes and teas from around the world. Outside the complex, the Costello burger bar is a successful local place to finish off your day of culture.
