Five places where you can eat the best chocolate with churros in Madrid
Although climate change has delayed the arrival of the cold weather, it has not prevented us from making plans for the season, such as strolling around the city centre, enjoying the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and taking a well-deserved break at snack time with a nice, warm cup of chocolate with churros.
Because churros are not just for breakfast. In mid-afternoon, when the cold sets in, this typical, internationally known delicacy goes down very well indeed.
In Madrid there are several places where you can enjoy a nice churro-based snack. Some are better known, others less so. Here is our selection:
- San Ginés. Without doubt, Madrid’s churrería par excellence. Located in the very heart of the city, it is known, dare we say, on an international level. You’ll have to be patient to find a table, though, as it’s often listed in all the city guides and attracts both tourists and locals alike.
- Santa Ana. Located in the district of La Latina and open since 1895, this is another of the city’s iconic “lifelong” places. There are no seats, but you can take your churros and sit on a bench to enjoy them while people-watching or even take them home if you live nearby.
- Chocolatería 1902. Located very close to Sol, this family has been making churros for five generations using the exact same recipe and producing the same delicious results. They also have a separate fryer for making them gluten-free, to the delight of people with coeliac disease.
- Chocolat. In the Barrio de las Letras, this place is famous for its thick, hot chocolate, perfect for eating with churros and porras, which are also made on the spot.
- Chocolates Valor. This chain of cafés is located in different parts of the city, as well as in the city centre. As in the previous case, it is also widely known for its chocolate, but its churros and porras are not to be missed either.
