Pompeii: the new immersive exhibition in Madrid
The exhibition can be seen in the Matadero Madrid Centre up until the 15th of October
A new immersive exhibition has arrived in Madrid this month, “The last days of Pompeii”, an exhibition endorsed by the Archaeological Museum of Pompeii which can be seen at the Matadero Centre in Madrid.
Pompeii, or simply Pompei, in its Italian version, has always attracted the attention of archaeologists, history buffs and the general public alike. The excavations that can be seen in this city a few kilometres from Naples take us back to the year 79 AD, where we can imagine what the lives and customs of its people were like before the lava from Vesuvius reduced them to ashes.
Well now you don’t have to go as far as Pompeii to find out a little about what happened. With this immersive exhibition at the Matadero Madrid Centre you can experience that terrifying autumn first hand by means of recreations of archaeological pieces and sensory phenomena the likes of breezes and smells that make the exhibition even more realistic than you thought possible.
You can also visit the amphitheatre, where you can watch, and even participate in a gladiatorial fight against a variety of beasts, an activity that was quite common at the time.
The recreation of the city is exquisite, and is designed to make sure the visitor or spectator is not left unmoved. It’s likely that many of those who see it will want to visit the original on their next holiday.
The exhibition can be seen at the Matadero until the 15th of October, from Monday to Friday at different times – consult the website. Tickets can be purchased either at the ticket office on arrival or online. Prices are around €19 for a general pass, with discounts available for groups, families and the over 65s. As with other immersive exhibitions, the different entry times are designed to avoid crowds and allow the visitor to enjoy the experience to the full.
