Flamenco en Madrid
Flamenco is an art from that originated in the South of Spain, however its roots are in foreign art forms that came to Spain with the Islamic empire and stayed, influencing the local music and dance forms.
The origins of Flamenco are very vague and hazy. Even the origin of the word Flamenco is unknown. Some think that the word comes from the corruption of “FélagMengue” (fugitive peasant in Arabic) which would have been used with gypsies after their proscription as a result of the expulsion of the Moors out of Spain. Other theories are based on the literal meaning of the word Flamenco (Flemish), however the etymology of the word remains uncertain.
A wide range of cultural influences present in Spain have left their mark on flamenco. In 711 the Moors conquered “Al Andalus” and maintained their domination until their final expulsion from Granada by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1492.
Thus, during these centuries, the Islamic invaders did not destroy: they assimilated.
Spain profited enormously of these centuries and the influences of the Islamic culture can still be heard in Flamenco (enharmonic techniques, using smaller intervals than the semitone.)
Although every region of Spain has its own dance and music form, and flamenco belongs to Andalucia, the old kingdom of Al-Andalus in the south, its popularity is such that flamenco can be heard anywhere in Spain. In Madrid, you can watch good flamenco shows in Corral de la Moreria, in Calle Morería 17, where you share a nice dinner with friends while enjoying the wonderful music and dance of flamenco.
