Madrid, puerto de mar
Don’t let your friends make you jealous with their photos of succulent fish dishes being enjoyed by the beach because, despite there not being a sea, Madrid has a large selection of fantastic fish and seafood restaurants.
We start with ceviche, a South American recipe that has gained many fans in Spain. Distrito 798 is an excellent place to try it (Mediterranean ceviche or Mar y Luz (sea and light) ceviche), although they also have other seafood delights such as the salmon tiradito with citric fruits, camote and daikon ponzu. This restaurant combines Japanese and Peruvian cuisine in four different spaces, each more spectacular and luxurious than the other (top range).
For something more affordable but still of the highest quality, Cevicheando is a perfect option. It is located in the unique market of San Ildefonso (Calle Fuencarral, 57) and its chef Luciano Delgado makes two singular versions of it: one made of sea bass and the other, a more experimental one, by mixing octopus, squid or shrimp.
If you fancy eating exquisite fish in a proper restaurant, El Pescador is an excellent option. This Galician restaurant opened in 1975 and it serves the best products from this North-eastern Spanish region, such as fresh monkfish, hake in green sauce, deep-fried hake kokotxas and, of course, the best seafood. It is also a member of the Fishmonger Group of A Coruña, which means that they receive the freshest fish every day and eating it will make you feel like if you’re doing so in the port itself. Find El Pescador on Calle Ortega y Gasset, 75.
Another favourite that you can find in the most select guides is Álbora, which boasts a Michelin Star and two Suns of the Repsol Guide. It offers tasting menus that range from 68 to 74 euros (VAT and wine not included), that come with grilled lobster with cuttlefish broth or razor clams with a socarrat of seafood and marrow. Another star dish on the menu is the monkfish with tomato, apple and almond emulsion. Hungry? Then go and treat yourself, you deserve it!
