Mercado de motores: apunta la próxima fecha

It is an event without a fixed date, which means that if you would like to visit it, you need to keep an eye out for when the next date will be. Mercado de Motores, the vintage market located in an old railway station with trains in the background, takes place on the second weekend of each month and the next one, in November, will take place on the 7^th and 8^th of this month. Where? In the Railway Museum (Museo del Ferrocarril), on Paseo de las Delicias, 21, just a few minutes’ walk away from Atocha railway station and well communicated with our charming hotel in Madrid. Entrance is free.

What is Mercado de Motores, exactly? On its website, it is defined as a “market that sells vintage and second-hand products, design items, food and music in an old train station”, which is quite a precise location. The place itself is worthy of a visit in itself, an old railway station like those we see in Monet’s paintings, a station that was always much more than just a railway station: it was a complex built for the correct functioning of the railway network. As an anecdote, during General Franco’s dictatorship it was used as a filming location for classics of the silver screen such as Doctor Zhivago, appearing as the railway station of communist Moscow.

Many sellers gather here every month selling all kinds of items, from jewellery, gourmet food, footwear, decoration items and different gifts. It is the perfect excuse to treat yourself, buy a gift for someone or renovate your wardrobe in a young and hipster atmosphere, similar to that of many London flea markets. The gastronomic option is also interesting thanks to the presence of food trucks, which are accompanied by live music. It is advisable to go there before lunch, at about 12.00pm, because afterwards it can get quite busy and it is harder to access all the stalls and food trucks without having to queue. One of its characteristics is that the market has its own currency to make transactions easier. It is, quite simply, an experience you cannot miss out on.
